HoverRace is a racing game developed by GrokkSoft. The beginnings of this game can be traced back to 1996. In that time, the Internet era had just begun and the game was released in a pay-to-play scheme. By 1998 the game had reached its peak in popularity, and its decline started. For many years, it was left abandoned until 2006, when it became open source. That's how the new HoverRace v1 came to light. Although it wasn't the first version exactly, it was meant to be symbolical. The game is very simple, you have a hover craft which you must race against other players and get to the finish line first. There are weapons that can help you along the way. It has a very Mario Kart feel, and that is a good thing. The air bumpers of the hovercraft make for some interesting racing as well. HoverRace shows its age quickly, the graphics look much older than a 1996 game. The amazing thing is that it even has split screen mode, a rarity in today's games. It is hard to find an online server, so the best choice for the game is in local game-play. However, being so many similar and better looking-games around, there are not many reasons to keep playing this one. It is also Open Source, so it can serve as a project game.
